Little History

The Marian Davis Scholarship Fund was established in 1961 as a tribute to a teacher and political leader who died from breast cancer in 1960. Marian fought for racial fairness and the rights of employees. While raising her family, she was also comfortable in the classroom, on a hunger strike, or in a prison cell.

Marian’s husband, Horace B. Davis, affectionately known as Hockey by those who knew and loved him, established the Fund as a tribute to her. Hockey was dedicated to establishing a Fund that would honor a bright teacher who was punished for her efforts to promote peace and freedom among her students.
